Then She Was Gone – Lisa Jewell

THEN: She was fifteen, her mother’s golden girl. She had her whole life ahead of her. And then, in the blink of an eye, Ellie was gone.
NOW : It’s been ten years since Ellie disappeared, but Laurel has never given up hope of finding her daughter.
And then one day a charming and charismatic stranger called Floyd walks into a café and sweeps Laurel off her feet.

Before too long she’s staying the night at this house and being introduced to his nine year old daughter.
Poppy is precocious and pretty – and meeting her completely takes Laurel’s breath away.

Because Poppy is the spitting image of Ellie when she was that age.
And now all those unanswered questions that have haunted Laurel come flooding back.

What happened to Ellie? Where did she go?
Who still has secrets to hide?

My Review:  I love Lisa Jewell’s books and am slowly making my way through her entire back catalogue and was delighted to be given an ARC of her latest book from the publishers and Netgalley so it jumped straight to the top of my toppling TBR pile.

This book focuses on missing teenager Ellie and her distraught mother Laurel.  One of this authors’ many talents is breathing life into her characters and making them so real that you can totally empathise and sympathise with both Ellie and Laurel throughout the story.  Then She Was Gone has a distressing and disturbing story line, but I was hooked by the first chapter.

You are always guaranteed a gripping story line from Lisa Jewell as well as also a book full of interesting characters, some humorous situations and more importantly relationships filled with plausible and realistic emotions.  This was an utter page-turner for me and I thoroughly recommend it.
