My Review: The Perfect Friend has two main characters, Alex who is a recovering anorexic, estranged from her husband and twin children and Carrie, who has terminal cancer. They meet at a support group and very quickly developed a connection and formed a close friendship and it is clear from the beginning that both characters are damaged and have secrets they are keeping from each other.
Without giving any of the story line away, this book had me turning those pages super fast eager to find out what was going on. It was very easy to become submerged in the characters feelings; Alex, the maternal older woman in need of someone to care and look out for since her twins left, Carrie the young and seemingly happy-go-lucky girl who needs a “mother figure” whilst dealing with her diagnosis.
However, being a psychological thriller we know all is NOT what it seems. Expect twists, turns, surprises and red-herrings. Expect to think you know exactly what’s happening only to realise by the next chapter you have been led merrily down the wrong road.
There is no doubt that Barbara Copperthwaite can write a twisty, twister of a thriller, in fact I think she could re-write my chinese takeaway menu and leave me thinking the butler did it. Another clever but dark psychological thriller – highly recommended.

More importantly, she loves cakes, wildlife photography and, last but definitely not least, her two dogs, Scamp and Buddy (who force her to throw tennis balls for them for hours).
Having spent over twenty years as a national newspaper and magazine journalist, Barbara has interviewed the real victims of crime – and also those who have carried those crimes out. She is fascinated by creating realistic, complex characters, and taking them apart before the readers’ eyes in order to discover just how much it takes to push a person over a line.
