A Quickie with Caroline Mitchell

Tell me about your latest book and why we should read it?

Sleep Tight is my latest book and is different to other crime thrillers in that it is written by an ex-detective of nine years. In it, my killer poses his victims as fairytale characters. Unfortunately for them, he is re-enacting the Brother’s Grimm version as he undertakes each crime. You’ll never look at fairytales the same way again.

If someone was to write your life story what would the title be?

I already have. It’s called Paranormal Intruder and is the true story of my life while I was still in the police.

What’s the strangest fan question or request you’ve received?

I’ve had someone email me to say they loved my work and had thought of a really great idea for my next novel. They would be kind enough to split the royalties with me if I wrote the book. Needless to say, I politely declined.

If you could co-write with anyone in the world (alive or dead) who would it be?

That’s tricky because I would love to write with my hero, Stephen King but then I would be sure to feel woefully inadequate in his presence.

Tell me something nobody else knows about you (yet!).

I have an irrational hatred of mustard in every way, shape and form. I can’t even bear to have it on the kitchen table. It makes me gag.

Finally please recommend 3 books that you have recently read and tell me why you’ve chosen these.

Eleanor Oliphant is completely Fine – I’m not the type to read feel good stories but this one just blew me away. I laughed, almost cried, and I’m still thinking about it now. No mean feat to move this cynical crime writer, believe me.

She Be Damned by MJ Tjia – Again, this historical crime thriller is not my usual reading fodder but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Brilliantly written, if you like Sherlock Holmes and want to be whisked back in time then you’ll love this.

The Doll House by Phoebe Morgan – now this was right up my street. A dark, haunting psychological thriller by a debut author. I could not put this book down.
