A Quickie with Tom Bale

Tell me about your latest book and why we should read it?

EACH LITTLE LIE is the story of a young woman, Jen Cornish, who does what appears to be an innocuous little favour for a neighbour, only to find herself drawn into a conspiracy that sees her accused of a crime and ultimately puts the life of her seven-year-old son in danger.

If someone was to write your life story what would the title be?

Are We There Yet?

What’s the strangest fan question or request you’ve received?

A few years ago someone was very insistent that I send them some signed photographs, which struck me as very odd. But surely nothing can beat the experience of turning up at a social event for writers and bloggers and discovering that the one and only Shell Baker was wearing a T-shirt with a picture of me and the message: OMG IT’S TOM BALE!

If you could co-write with anyone in the world (alive or dead) who would it be?

John Sandford. He’s my all time favourite crime writer, and I’d be trying to learn as much as I could while hoping a little of his magic rubbed off on me.

Tell me something nobody else knows about you (yet!)

I was an extra, along with my daughter, in the 2010 remake of BRIGHTON ROCK, a blink-and-you-miss-it appearance that nevertheless meant a lot, given that Graham Greene is one of my literary heroes.

Finally please recommend 3 books that you have recently read and tell me why you’ve chosen these.

Of the books I’ve read recently, the three I’d recommend are:

SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari, a wide-ranging history of our species from the earliest times to the modern day. It’s very well-written and crammed with fascinating insights into human behaviour.

BEFORE THE FALL by Noah Hawley is a fabulously exciting thriller by the creator of the TV show, Fargo.

THE CITY OF MIRRORS by Justin Cronin is the final part of a truly epic post-apocalyptic vampire trilogy.

Who is Tom Bale? Tom Bale is the author of eight books, including the bestsellers SEE HOW THEY RUN and ALL FALL DOWN. He has been writing since the age of seven, and completed his first novel at fifteen. After twenty years and hundreds of rejection slips, his first novel SINS OF THE FATHER was published under his real name, David Harrison. With his next book, SKIN AND BONES, he acquired an agent, a pseudonym and a book deal that enabled him to write full time. He lives in Brighton with his family. Visit his website at www.tombale.net, follow him on Facebook, or on Twitter: @t0mbale (zero instead of “o”).
